Allen Press offers a variety of career opportunities. Below are examples of typical roles we recruit for.
Graphic Designer… works on a variety of projects for clients that may include the design of journals and journal advertisements, online banners, and print and online newsletters, as well as other marketing materials such as advertising inserts for both scholarly and special-interest publications. A Graphic Designer at Allen Press may act as a consultant to other departments who have design, paging, or layout related questions.
Managing Editor… acts as a bridge to production services, overseeing the day-to-day activities involved in manuscript coordination, issue planning and organization, and production coordination The Managing Editor is a publication’s representative at Allen Press. They guide manuscripts through each step of the process from point of entry, through first proofs and revisions, to delivery to print and/or online publishing. A Managing Editor at Allen Press is experienced with the intricacies of scientific writing as well as the demands of publication production with excellent communications skills. Timely correspondence with authors, editors and associate editors, reviewers, and other members of the team is a part of the Managing Editor’s job.
Proofreader… knows all aspects of a publication's unique requirements and individual style, performing proofreading and quality checks of galleys and page proofs at all stages of composition to confirm that the typeset content is consistent with the style sheet and specifications of each individual journal. An Allen Press Proofreader assures that all client instructions have been followed and that all revisions and edits are incorporated in the final version.
Applications Developer… performs technical activities involved in designing, implementing, and supporting software applications and interfaces for internal and external customers. An Applications Developer has an in-depth knowledge of relevant computer languages and their role involves writing specifications, designing, building, testing, implementing, and sometimes supporting applications using computer languages and development tools. Applications Developers will apply their knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems to write computer programs to perform various tasks with necessary specifications.
Account Manager… manages all non financial aspects of assigned accounts, maintaining frequent, direct contact with the customer to ensure a positive relationship. An Account Manager processes proofs upon receipt, maintains and monitors production schedules, fosters and facilitates the flow of information to and from the customer to other departments within Allen Press. Account Managers perform quality control functions at various stages of production and other related duties.
Association Manager… maintains varying levels of business office support for multiple nonprofit associations as described by client contracts. Association Managers may serve as the primary contact and correspondent for client officers and board members while overseeing publication fulfillment services, renewal programs, and the processing of membership dues and subscriptions. An Allen Press Association Manager establishes and maintains proactive contact with each client, gaining detailed knowledge of their organization and operation and developing a positive customer relationship.
Typesetting Coordinator… processes and tracks production jobs, coordinating the on-boarding and transitioning of new and existing titles. The coordinator will interface with the typesetting development team to research and resolve errors.
Sales… secures the sales of print and electronic services that complement Allen Press’ communication solutions. Sales personnel are responsible for maximizing the company’s market share, profitability, efficiency, and customer satisfaction by selling targeted programs or in targeted customer segments. Allen Press Sales personnel develop and manage a tightly focused sales process and pipeline to introduce our portfolio of digital and print solutions to new and existing accounts. This position is a significant driver for business growth and is responsible for the launch and sales success of new service initiatives.
Online Publishing… duties require teamwork to consistently meet deadlines and maintain a high level of attention to detail to prepare article content for publication on the Internet or delivered to a third party. Responsibilities include preparing files for tagging by cleaning files, figures, tables, and math; checking for missing content; normalizing graphics and filters to insert article metadata for online-only functionality; and loading content on the server.
Bindery Operator… sets up and operates the bindery equipment. This involves programming the computer controls of the binder, making sure equipment is accurately programmed and that signatures are gathered correctly. During the production of each job, the bindery operator oversees the entire process to ensure that the product meets quality standards.
