Looking Forward to Another 75 Years of Partnership (and Change)

This year Allen Press celebrates its 75th anniversary as a printer and publishing services provider. The company owes its longevity to the commitment of both its customers and its employees. Strong relationships and providing quality service and superior craftsmanship have formed the foundation of our success. We have a variety of activities planned to honor this milestone including publishing a commemorative book detailing our history.

Our founder, Harold Allen could never have imagined when he started the company in 1935 that the publishing industry would be where it is today. A lot has changed in 75 years, as one would expect, but the rate of that change seemed much more manageable than the pace we now face.

Speaking of change, our annual Emerging Trends in Scholarly Publishing™ Seminar is rapidly approaching. If I could describe the publishing industry with one word, it would be “change.” This April’s seminar, Scholarly Publishing: Boldly Going Where No Journal Has Gone Before, will provide some perspective about where scholarly publishing is headed and what technologies and business models are currently being investigated by publishers. With its playful reference, the keynote address, Hitchhiker’s Guide to Scholarly Publishing, is sure to keep attendees engaged as Michael Clark, of Clark Publishing Group, shares with us his vision of how the stars might align for scholarly publishing. We invite you to join us to discuss a range of topics such as the Google Book Settlement and the Compact for Open-Access Publishing Equity, among others.

In continuing with the theme of change, I’m delighted to announce that the FrontMatter website has been redesigned and is launching with this issue. We’ve improved the layout and accessibility of articles, making it easy to browse and search for articles and share information with the click of your mouse. The complete archives of FrontMatter will be posted, in a fully searchable interface, in the coming months. Sign up for e-mail alerts when new issues are posted by clicking on the Subscriptions link at http://allenpress.com/frontmatter/subscribe.
